Shayla Gave the Shocking News to Candace: “I’m Pregnant 😱”

It was a Saturday afternoon — one of those unremarkable days that felt safe, routine. Candace had just parked herself on Shayla’s couch, a matcha latte in hand, scrolling through her feed and talking about some guy she ghosted last week.

“Girl, he sent me a six-paragraph apology,” she laughed. “Like, sir, I ordered you tacos and you dipped. What are you even apologizing for?”

Shayla smiled, but it was tight. Forced. Her leg was bouncing. She kept checking her phone but not replying to anything. The air in the room felt slightly... off.

Candace noticed. “Okay. What’s going on? You’re doing that thing with your jaw. The clench.”

Shayla stood up. Walked to the window. Turned around.

“I have to tell you something.”

Now that got Candace’s attention.

“You’re scaring me. Is someone dead?”

“No—no one’s dead. But it’s big. And I haven’t told anyone. Not even my mom.”

Candace sat up straighter. “Okay… what’s going on?”

There was a long pause. Shayla took a deep breath.

“I’m pregnant.”

Silence. The kind that wraps around a moment like fog. Then:

“Wait — what?”

“I’m pregnant,” Shayla repeated, more quietly. “Eight weeks.”

Candace blinked. Her brain tried to keep up. This was Shayla — her hyper-organized, birth-control-reminder-app-using, five-year-plan-having best friend. The one who always said, “I love kids… one day… maybe… eventually.”

“Okay. Wow. Um… who’s the dad?”

Shayla sat down beside her, eyes watering slightly.

“It’s Micah.”

Candace's eyes widened. “Micah Micah? As in your situationship that ended six months ago?”

“Yeah,” Shayla said quietly. “It was… a one-time thing. We were both drunk. I thought— I don’t know what I thought. But now I’m here. And I’m terrified.”

Candace was silent for a moment. Processing. Then she took Shayla’s hand.

“Okay. First of all, you’re not alone. We’re going to breathe through this. Together. Got it?”

Shayla nodded, a tear slipping down her cheek. “I was so scared to tell you. I thought you’d freak.”

Candace shook her head. “Girl, of course I freaked. My soul left my body for a second. But then it came back, and it reminded me who you are.”

Shayla looked at her. “Who am I?”

“You’re Shayla. The one who survives everything. The one who overthinks literally everything except apparently that one night with Micah,” she said with a smile. “But seriously? You’re strong. You’re going to figure this out. And I’m going to be right here. Even if I have to learn how to change diapers and warm bottles and punch Micah in the face.”

Shayla laughed through her tears. “Thank you. I didn’t know how much I needed to hear that.”

“You’re gonna be okay,” Candace said, hugging her tightly. “This baby? Already has one hell of a mom. And one badass auntie.”
